Free and Discounted

Everybody loves free stuff!

A fantastic freebee network is www.freecycle.org. The idea is to give items to others who will use them rather than adding to the landfills. The exciting part is that you can find almost anything that you can think of! And yes, everything is free, that is the rule. You may post almost anything that you no longer need (please read the guidelines for each group as some differ. For example: some allow pets and others do not). Have fun responding to Offers right away. Email them directly (click on their email address) and let them know what and when you will pick up of the item(s) they have listed. The first person to arrange a quick pick up usually gets it. When the poster replies that the item is still available and yours upon pickup (and you shout Yay!), they then give you an address of where the item(s) can be retrieved. HINT: Sometimes people promise to pick up and never do, so do not hesitate to inquire about anything listed on the board. You may get a “sorry it has been taken” reply one day and a “you can have it if you are still interested” email a week later. So remember, you’ve really got nothing to lose by asking.

The only thing you need to join is a free Yahoo email account. To become a member of your local Freecycle groups, on the Freecycle site, click on Browse Groups, select your State, then your closest town or county. You can join as many as you like but only one at a time. You are able to Join on the bottom of the first group page that you see or Visit the Site and click: JOIN THIS GROUP. The Yahoo login opens and and you’re in. TIP: Be sure to choose Daily Digest upon sign up (although you can go back and edit your membership details later) or you will get bombarded as every single post individually hits your In Box. The Daily Digest is a contained list so if you sign up for a few areas, your email box stays organized in the long run.
So now you have signed up, become approved (usually instantly) sit back and read the lists of things both Wanted and Offered. Most groups prefer that you post a few Offers before posting Wanted posts but you can reply to Offers immediately if you see something you can use. Do not hesitate to ask posters questions about items they are Offering and check pictures if they post them on the site (the PHOTOS link is on the bottom of every email) or request them or any other information you need before you take the ride. This truly can be a lot of fun and is also a great way to declutter plus this activity really fits most everyone’s budget. Happy Freecycling!
