Thrift stores are bargain shopping for the open minded. Many people donate brand new items which they failed to return to the store or received as gifts. It is not unusual to find things unopened or with tags still attached. People may change their home decor and simply by new appliances, dishes or curtains (to name just a few) and donate the ones that no longer match but are still in fine condition.

Some people may say “yuck” to the idea of thrift shopping but it really is similar to hitting the garage sales. In fact it can be better because they generally have rules about everything being clean and functional. If they are a reputable store (and many are associated with Churches) for example, if a microwave that you bought from them is not working, you could take it back unless they have “All items sold as is.” or “All sales are final” posted. It is a good idea to ask about their policies, just to be on the safe side.

It is a good idea to also consider the area in which the store is located. The quality of the donated items will reflect the general economics of the community so you may choose to search the web for some shops in wealthier areas for better quality items.

If you are still questionable about thrift shopping consider this scenario. Your utility and credit card bills keep growing and they don’t stop rolling into your mailbox. Your rent or mortgage is due, your car payment bill just arrived, your vehicle really needs a tune up and tires plus it’s time to renew your car insurance. You sit down, you sigh and your TV dies before your very eyes. Wouldn’t it be worth it to check out the local thrift shop, craigslist.com or freecycle.org at this point? If you agree, then good for you! You are getting started in the adventure of beating the odds and being creative with your hard earned income. If you buy a new TV but can’t pay the electric or cable bill, what’s the point? Sometimes you may have to be a patient with this new frugal mindset but when you suddenly find someone (or they find you because you took two minutes and posted a WANTED ad), who is moving and who has decided not to bring their widescreen TV with them. Then you would be glad you learned a bit about networking for free or deeply discounted items, don’tcha’ think? ;)
